PA School Update: Week 1

life in pa school

I can’t believe I just finished my first week in PA school!   I am amazed at how much I have learned already.  I am also amazed at how much fun it is!  I look forward to going to class/tutor group every day.

Our schedule is usually 8-4:30, with no lunch break.  I think the thing that has shocked me the most (and would shock anyone that knows me well) is that I haven’t been eating lunch until 1 or 2 some days.  I know this doesn’t seem like a big deal to the average person, but people that know me at all, know that I will bite someone’s head off if I don’t get fed in regular intervals.  But shockingly, with school I am just so interested in what is going on that the time flies and I don’t even realize I am hungry.  My stomach may growl, but suddenly another hour has passed.  It is so unbelievable.  Really.  (I bet my roomie from college is laughing at this…)

This was in college…my friends were trying to feed me butter to keep me from becoming Oscar the Grouch.

I also had my first cadaver lab.  I don’t think I will be eating lunch right before I go in there again.  It is a small room, really hot and the smell is super intense.  I thought I was going to pass out.  And then someone asked to see the head, and I about lost it.

Moving on…we also learned to take a complete history this week and then we had to practice in the lab (which looks exactly like a doctors office).  I got nervous when I realized how real it looked, but it was actually not too bad and pretty fun.  I also had to be a patient for another student, which was really funny.  Especially when I told him I (not really me, but “Esther” the patient I was pretending to be) smoked pot everyday, I think that shocked him pretty good.  He couldn’t quit laughing.  Guess I don’t look like a druggie, even when I am acting.  😉

So much more happened this week and I can’t believe it has only been a week.  I am really enjoying what I am doing and can’t wait to learn more!
