I have had a few questions about making homemade tortillas….so I though I would do a step by step guide.
You will need flour, salt, oil, baking powder and water.
Measure all your dry ingredients into a bowl and then add the oil.
Using your hands, mix the ingredients together. It should look crumbly.
Add the water. I use a spoon at this point because it is super sticky at first. Once everything is mixed it should come together in a ball…and it won’t be as sticky.
Let the dough rest for 30 minutes.
I covered mine with a towel while I prepped the filling for our tacos.
Prepare a work surface. I only use a little bit of flour, just enough to prevent them from sticking.
Divide the dough into half, each half into half, and then into thirds. This should get you 12 balls of dough.
Pat a dough ball into a small circle.
Now use your rolling pin to roll out your tortilla. Mine are rarely circular as you can see below.
Heat a nonstick skillet over medium-low heat. I have to adjust mine as we go along so that they don’t get too hot too fast. When you start to see a few bubbles like above flip the tortilla over.
This is what it will look like once it is browned.
Place on a plate wrapped in a towel to stay warm. Serve!
If there is only two of you, just half the recipe.
makes 12 tortillas
3 cups flour
½ teaspoonbaking powder
⅓ cupcanola oil
1 cuphot water
Mix the flour, salt, and baking powder with a whisk. Add the canola oil and mix with your fingers until all the oil is incorporated and the mixture looks like fine crumbs. Add 1 cup of hot water and mix until a ball is formed (use a spoon at this point if you don’t like getting messy, you may need to add a drop or two more if the dough won’t come together) Cover with plastic wrap and let the dough rest for about 30 minutes. (you can also refrigerated it overnight).
Divide the dough into 12 balls and roll out one at a time on a floured surface. Brush off excess flour. Cook on a hot, ungreased griddle or cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Turn the tortilla when brown blisters form on the first side. Stack the tortillas inside a towel and serve warm.
