Homemade Refried Beans

Did you know that it is super easy to make a ton of refried beans for $1.50?  Did you know you can freeze leftover refried beans??
I didn’t.  But now I do.  I got the recipe for the beans from the same blog where I got the homemade applesauce recipe (blog link below).

As you can see from the photo it made about 1.5 quarts of beans. At first I thought there was too much black pepper, but it actually turned out perfect.  I added more jalapenos near the end because we like ours spicy (of course).  Next time, I think I would add even more liquid back into the beans.
Easy Refried Beans
  • 1/2 an onion, diced
  • 2 cups dry pinto beans, rinsed
  • 1 jalapeno or other hot pepper, seeded and chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ¾ teaspoons salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • One big pinch of cumin
  • 6 cups water
  1. Combine all ingredients in slow cooker.
  2. Cook on high for 8 hours or overnight while you are sleeping.
  3. Remove the bigger onion chunks and drain the excess liquid. If desired, save excess liquid until the final product is desired consistency.
  4. Mash remaining beans with a potato masher and voila! You have homemade refried beans.
