Sweet and Sour (Sesame) Chicken

Den requested Sweet and Sour Chicken this past week.  I was excited to try a new recipe, especially when I found one that tons of food bloggers had reviewed and talked about so positively.
Well, they were right the recipe was really good.  However, it tasted like sesame chicken, not sweet and sour.  I don’t know which is right, but we will definitely be making this again sometime soon.
SWEET AND SOUR CHICKEN
  • 3-4 chicken breasts
  • salt
  • pepper
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1/4 cup canola oil
Cut boneless chicken breasts into chunks. Season with salt and pepper. Dip chicken in cornstarch and then in egg. Fry in a little oil until brown but not cooked through. Place in a single layer in a baking dish. Mix sauce ingredients (below) together and pour over chicken.
SAUCE:
  • 3/4 cup of sugar
  • 4 T ketchup
  • 1/2 cup of vinegar
  • 1 T soy sauce
  • 1 tsp of garlic salt (I just used garlic powder since the soy sauce is so salty)

Bake for one hour at 350 degrees. Turn chicken every 15 minutes. If you like extra sauce, make another batch of sauce and bring it to a boil on the stove top. Stir constantly and let cook over medium heat until thickened and reduced – about 6-8 minutes.  Broil the chicken for the last 5 minutes, to get everything crispy. Serve over rice.
my notes:
  • I just used 1-2 chicken breasts, since it is just Den and I.
  • I made the amount of sauce listed above, but poured half over the chicken.  Don’t pour too much over the chicken, just enough to coat everything, or it won’t get thick.  We didn’t even use all the sauce we made.
  • Broil the chicken for the last 5 minutes to get everything crispy.  This is really crucial!
  • I might add some sesame seeds next time…
